Have you (as a pilot) ever spent any time on the crown line?  You should.  Many pilots have never been assigned to the job of Crown Line.  Do you realize how hard that job is?

Crew Avail

One of the common inflation procedures is to fill the balloon full or "Packed" as some say.  Then hit the burner and stay on it till the balloon is fully upright.  As a pilot do you realize what that does to the poor crew person on the crown line?

I will tell you, it yanks the H@(( out of them..  That balloon pulls so hard on the line that many crew fall down or just let go.  When you are done with this topic see the topic Better Inflation's.

Unless you are inflating in windy conditions it is better to come up a little soft.  This will make the crown line crew persons job much easier when it comes to stopping your balloon in the perfectly upright position.  If you are inflating in windy conditions tie a bowline loop in the end of the crown line and use a tow strap to allow for two people on the crown line.  This will provide better control and allow you to stand the balloon up more "Stiff" to combat the windy conditions.

Best of all.  As a pilot you NEED to run the crown line for a few other pilots and see exactly what you are putting your crew through!  You may be surprised how tough the crown line job is!
