I will be the first to admit that I am fairly uninformed about the new Drone regulations so if I say something that is incorrect please be kind and let me know what you know.
From what I understand some of these new drones are going to be the size of a washing machine. They travel at very high speeds and around 400 ft. The are going to be relying on ADS-B for aircraft avoidance and at least some sort of radar or collision avoidance device. But can they see a balloon? What are we going to do if you are in flight and a washing machine is flying at you doing 60mph? How do you get out of the way? When does the obstacle avoidance kick in? Most likely by the time you hear the thing it will be too late. Even if you spot it a half mile out there still is not a lot you are going to be able to do about it.
